Hon. George R. Strathy becomes Chief Justice of Ontario

As of June 13, 2014, the Honourable George R. Strathy has been appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario, replacing Mr. Justice W. Winkler who retired effective December 10, 2013. Justice Strathy has been on Ontario Court of Appeal since April 2013 and formerly served for five years as a justice of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario for the Toronto region. Justice Strathy was a long-time active member, director and Regional Vice-President (Central) of the CMLA. He was also active in the Canadian Bar Association and a member of the Association of Average Adjusters of Canada. He authored two major maritime law books, The Law and Practice of General Average in Canada (1995) and (with C. Moore), The Law and Practice of Marine Insurance in Canada (2003). Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Justice Strathy practiced with Strathy and Isaacs in Toronto, specializing in civil litigation, especially in the fields of maritime and transportation law. He has also practised with the firms of MacKinnon, McTaggart; Campbell Godfrey and Lewtas, as well as Fasken Martineau Walker All members of the CMLA join in congratulating Chief Justice Strathy on this appointment as and wish him well in discharging his important functions.
